What to see and do in
Santa Marta
With this guide on
things to see and do in Santa Marta in one day, we want to help you prepare
your route and stay in a relatively little-visited city in Colombia, but very
important, since it serves as the gateway to the Tayrona National Natural Park
and to the incredible trekking to the Lost City.
Santa Marta in Colombia
What to see in Santa
Marta
Although, as we said,
the city is much smaller, at least its historic center, and there are not as
many things to do in Santa Marta as in Cartagena de Indias, its tourist
attractions can be visited perfectly in half a day or a day, so we want to
leave you a selection of the route that we follow to get to know Santa Marta in
one day.
Historic center of
Santa Marta
Walking through its streets is one of the things to do in Santa Marta in one day.
With low houses in
which the protagonists are the color and the balconies, many of them full of
flowers, this is the historical legacy that can be seen in Santa Marta and that
makes this one of the cities worth reserving. a few hours to meet her.
Although there are
other areas, the most representative are between Avenida del Ferrocarril and
22nd Street.
Simon Bolivar Square
Located in the
historic center and next to the impressive Santa Marta Bay, between Carreras 1
and 3, and Calles 14 and 15, this place is known for being the main square of
the city and for being another of the places to see in Santa Marta that you
cannot miss.
Here you can also
find the bronze statue of Simón Bolívar, located in the central area of the
square.
Gold Museum, one of
the places to see in Santa Marta
Although if on your
route through Bogotá in one day or in Bogotá in two days you already went to
the Gold Museum, you will probably see it smaller, if you have a couple of
hours, this is one of the most recommended visits to do in Santa Marta .
Located in the
recently renovated Customs House, the exhibition is divided into several rooms
where you can see ceramic objects and jewelry that tell the story of Santa
Marta and the region, and a room with gold objects.
• Hours: Tuesday to
Saturday: 09:00 to 17:00 / Sundays and holidays: 10:00 to 15:00 / Monday closed

Boyfriend's park
Located in the center
of Santa Marta, this is one of the green spaces best known by tourists and
locals, since it is very close to the main streets and also the liveliest. Here
during the day you can enjoy the shade provided by many of its trees and at
night live and enjoy one of the liveliest areas of the city.
Being in the historic center and if you spend the night in the city, we recommend you come at different times of the day to see how it changes over time.

Basilica of Santa
Marta
With a white color
that makes it stand out from the rest of the buildings, the Cathedral of Santa
Marta or Basílica Menos, as it is also known, is another essential visit to do
in Santa Marta.
In Renaissance style,
Simón Bolívar was buried here and it was where he remained until his body was
repatriated to Venezuela and also where the remains of Rodrigo Bastidas,
founder of the city, rest.

Boardwalk and Paseo
Bastidas (Carrera 1C)
The Paseo Bastidas,
baptized with this name as a tribute to Rodrigo Bastidas, founder of the city,
is another of the essential places to see in Santa Marta and is also one of
those places that must be visited at various times of the day. We recommend you
come during the day to take a walk and enjoy the views of the Bay of Santa
Marta and of course, if the day is hot (which it surely will be), take a dip in
Bastidas beach, which although it is not the Best in the area, it can always be
used to cool off.

the nose
This small rock located in the middle of the bay of Santa Marta, which can be seen from the boardwalk, is the place where a jail for Creole rebels was installed after this piece of land served as a defense for the city in the Conquer time.
RECOMMENDED CARDS FOR TRAVEL
All bank cards work in the city.
Taganga beaches
Although we did not go, we read that only 5 kilometers from Santa Marta is the Taganga beach and Playa Grande, two beaches with much more atmosphere than those you can find in Santa Marta and even, according to many travelers, better than those in the Park Tayrona.
If you have a few free hours, it can always be another of the things to do in Santa Marta.
TIPS FOR TRAVELING TO SANTA MARTA
In addition to the places to see and the things to do in Santa Marta in one day, we want to leave you with a series of tips for visiting the city.
• Although Santa Marta is not as big as Cartagena de Indias, nor would we dare to say as beautiful, we do believe that it is an ideal place to spend at least one full day on the way to Tayrona or Minca or as a resting point before or after the Trekking to the Lost City.
• In addition to having a calm and peaceful Caribbean atmosphere, it has different places in the historic area that are fully restored and also several streets with a number of shops, restaurants and shops that are worth walking through and enjoying the atmosphere.
• Remember that the temperature is usually high so it is important to wear protection and if you are going to do a route through Santa Marta in one day, leave the central hours of the day to rest or visit the Gold Museum, for example, which it is under cover.
• Santa Marta, like most Colombian cities, is also synonymous with art and this can be seen in many parts of the historic center, where the walls serve as a canvas for many artists. We recommend you go with your camera ready as there are many corners where you can enjoy this open-air museum.
How to go to Santa Marta
In general, most travelers travel to Santa Marta from Cartagena de Indias. In this case we can choose the following ways to go to Santa Marta:
• Public bus:
• Private bus:
• Another option is to take a taxi from Cartagena de Indias to Santa Marta, but we believe that the price is not worth having the previous options that are just as fast.
• Another option, if you want to know Santa Marta
• Santa Marta
Where to eat in Santa Marta
Curiously, the variety and offer of restaurants in Santa Marta surprised us on the route through Colombia for free and we mistakenly thought that being a less touristy city than Cartagena de Indias, it would not have as many and good places to choose from.
Where to sleep
Although there are hundreds of options to stay in Santa Marta, whenever you can, we recommend you do it in the historic center area to be close to the main tourist attractions to see in Santa Marta.
We opted for La Calzada del Santo, one of the most recommended hotels, where we enjoyed excellent service, both from the owner and the staff, and comfortable, clean facilities that were perfect for spending several days in the city.
In addition to this, the hotel is located in a colonial house with a very special charm and serves a splendid breakfast included in the price of the room.
